The Olympic rings. The Olympic Games were originally an event held every four years at Olympia, Greece, from 776 BC to the year 393. The modern Olympic Games were first held in 1896. The old Olympic Games used an olive wreath as a symbol. Today, the five rings are used as a symbol of the many flags of the many participating nations.

The symbol of the ancient games was a wreath of olive branches, but the modern Olympic games use the five inter-locking rings, as a symbol of the many nations different flags and thereby their diversity.
