Description

Theatre is a 2500-year-old art form that in its western version has its origins in ancient Greece. Acting as an art form originated among other things from a celebration ceremony for the god Dionysus in ancient Greece. Here fertility was celebrated with a parade through town, ending at the town’s amphitheatre, “Dionysos-temple.” The tragedy, the comedy and the satyr were the three dramatic genres to emerge there. The actors wore masks partly because they could play several roles, but also to enhance the actor’s expression on stage so it could be seen all the way up in the back rows. Like many of the plays from antiquity are well known and famous today, so are the masks. They have become symbols of all of life’s highlights and gloomy moments and to the bright and dark sides that are in all people.
