Description

The Centaurs are mythological creatures from Greek mythology. They are creatures with the head, arms, and torso of a human and the body and legs of a horse. It is said that they lived in the mountains of Thessaly and Arcadia. The idea of a mythological creature that is half animal and half human is ancient, but the Centaurs were first common around 760-700 B.C. They are seen depicted countless places in Ancient Art: such as bronze figures, reliefs, on vases. Their existence is not limited to ancient Greek culture, they are also known in Etruscan and Roman art and culture and later in Renaissance and Baroque arts mythological scenes. Even in our time, we encounter Centaurs. The centaur has for example given its name to an asteroid and a star constellation, but also in contemporary art we encounter this mythical creature. For example in the Harry Potter movies, in which they fight with Harry Potter against evil, defending the balance of nature. A role that goes well in line with the role they had in antiquity. Legend has it that a bunch of centaurs got drunk at Lapither king Peirithoos’ wedding and assaulted the women. The ensuing battle between Lapither and centaurs are a popular motif in Greek art and was used often symbolic of a struggle between cosmos and chaos, civilization and savagery, Greeks and barbarians
